Joyce Family
« on: Saturday 17 December 05 16:52 GMT (UK) »
I am searching for my Great Grandfather, PATRICK JAMES JOYCE's, family and according to "family tradition" he came from Co. Mayo.  My grandma didn't know the exact town though.  I have found that he was born in either 1875 or 1877 (his death cert has b. 1877, his marriage record and immigration records have 1875) to Michael Joyce and Margaret (last name unknown -- can't read it on the death record).  He went with his family (parents and brother Martin and sisters Delia and Kate) to Hebburn, Tyne and Wear, England sometime after 1885, where he met and married my Great Grandmother, Maryann Hawkins in 1901.  They all immigrated to New York City by 1903.  He died in 1923 in New York City.

According to the Ellis Island records, Michael was born ca. 1843, Martin was born ca. 1885, and Delia was born ca. 1883.  Kate and Margaret came over prior to the rest of the family and I don't have dates for them.

Any help I could get on this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much.

Hi - not sure if this is them but looks a possibility
1891 census  5, Prince Consort Lane Hebburn
Michael Joyce head  44  Shipyard Labourer   born Ireland
Margaret   45                                                  born Ireland
Patrick  16                          -ditto -                    born Ireland
Kate  13                   Scholar                               born Ireland
Bridget  8                  scholar                           born Hebburn
Martin  4                                                        born Hebburn
It does look like them.-  I have had a couple of Bridgets and Delias- seems to be interchangeable.
As the younger two are born in England - you could apply for birth certificates and that would hopefully give you a lead with mother's name. Then perhaps you could look for Irish birth certificates based on both parents' names.
Best wishes
Heywood ::)

Hi Heywood,

Thank you so much!!  I'll send for the younger kids birth certificates.  I didn't know about the Delia/Bridgit switch (everything I have lists her as Delia) but it could be possible.

Thanks again for your help!!
