Hoatson's in Sanquhar
« on: Sunday 18 December 05 15:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could help me, I'm looking for Hoatson's in Sanquhar.

I have found the births of 3 children, William, Jean and John, all born in Sanquhar in the 1780's to James Hoatson and Martha Robertson. (BVRI - FHL film 1067971)

William later moved to Lanarkshire but it is belived that many of the Hoatson's were brought back and buried at Sanquhar Churchyard.  Is there anyway of finding out if they were buried in Sanquhar and if they had headstones?

Also any info about the parents of James Hoatson and/or Martha Robertson would be great as I'm completely stuck!

Hope it's not too big an ask.   :)

Merry Christmas
Love

Have you seen the Memorials of Sanquhar Kirkyard at:

http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~cdobie/sanquhar.htm

A quick look revealed two Hoatson

No 256 James Hoatson Watchmaker, and
No 426 James Hoatson Crawfordjohn

I have an interest as to the middle name of a Great Uncle William Hotson Glencross born 29/4/1871 in London.  His grandfather (James Glencross b. about 1811) came from Sanquhar.  Hotson/Hoatson??

Good hunting

Hi Sanqhar,

Thank you for that link, it is very interesting.

I've not some across any Glencross links with my Hoatson's but I'll keep an eye open for you.  I will also ask my other Hoatson descendants as they've done more research than me.

Best Wishes

Hi Miner49er,

Thank you for your message, what era were your Hoatson's from? Mine are from the 1700's.  I briefly visited Crawfordjohn a little over a year ago, but couldn't find any more info about my lot.

The village is so tiny, we must be related somehow!

Legs,
I'm related through marriage of Margaret Murray Hoatson born 1831, and John Somerville.
Have been to Crawfordjohn quite a few times - I live within 10 miles. It used to be much busier before the railways, as it was a crossroads of 4 coaching routes, but eventually has been sidelined.
It's also on WIKI -MAPS site, so you can get aerial photograph.
Someone has set-out Hoatson family tree going back to mid-1700s. Find it via Google search - 'Peasants to Puddles - my Family History by Nicky Rowberry', with some information from Claude Hoatson.
Cheers,

Thank you Miner49er,

I'll have a look at the aerial map, I'm a long way away in Sussex, so it was a very quick visit on our long drive home from a holiday on the Moray coast.

I think I may have seen that website, Claude has done an awful lot of research.

Thanks again

No problem.
I think you were also  looking for parents of John Hoatson born 1757. Have just found out today, through Ancestry.com match-up, that parents are  William Hoatson and Marion Lindsay, both born c1736 Location only given as Scotland.
