Wonder if it could be - The 85th Regiment ?
The 85th Regiment was raised in Shrewsbury in 1759 as 'the Royal Volontiers'; it was the first Light Infantry regiment established in the British Army. During the 'Seven Years' War', the 85th served against Belleisle off Brittany in 1760-1761 and in Portugal in 1762-1763. On the conclusion of the war, the 85th was disbanded. Re-raised as 'the Westminster Volunteers' in 1779 during the American Revolutionary War, the regiment served in the West Indies, being decimated by disease in Jamaica. On its return, most of its men were lost in a storm at sea. The regiment was again disbanded in 1783. Re-formed for the third time in 1793 (as 'the Bucks Volunteers'), the 85th fought with great distinction throughout the French wars of 1793-1815. It served in Flanders, on Madeira, at Walcheren in 1809 and in Spain and southern France, 1811-14. Converted to Light Infantry in 1809, the 85th was ordered to North America in 1814 on the conclusion of the Peninsular War. It took part in General Ross's invasion via Chesapeake Bay and fought at Bladensburg in Aug. 1814. The 85th were present during the burning of Washington but were repulsed at Baltimore. The British force then sailed southwards to attack New Orleans; the 85th took part in the disastrous battle fought in January 1815, which led to a humiliating defeat and retreat via the Gulf of Mexico. For its distinguished services in the French Wars, the 85th was designated 'the Duke of York's Own Regiment of Light Infantry' in 1815 and granted the motto 'Aucto Splendore Resurgo' ('I rise again in increased splendour') in token of its many re-formations. In 1821, after officers of the 85th protected George IV during riots in Brighton, the regiment was granted the title 'the King's Light Infantry' and changed from yellow to royal-blue facings. The rest of the century was one of peaceful garrison duties for the 85th, in England, Ireland, India and South Africa. Its only active service came in 1879-1880 during the Aghan War, serving in the Khyber line and in tribal operations against the Zaimushts on the North West Frontier. The 85th was in Natal, South Africa, by 1881 and later that year sailed for England to be amalgamated with the 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment to form the King's Shropshire Light Infantry.
