Atterby?, Devon

A london Census return clearly states birthplace as Atterby, Devon.
The only Atterby I can find is in Lincoln, yet he married someone from Bideford.
The London enumerator obviously transcribed his best guess, and consequently, I am hoping local people may have some idea, of where this could be, bearing in mind different accents, etc

Appley in Devon could this be it?

Thank you for your response. Appley looks quite far from Bideford, but based on your response, this has given me some ideas.
