1841 lookup: Palmers in Bosbury
« on: Wednesday 28 December 05 16:56 GMT (UK) »
Hello

We're keen to trace Edward Palmer, who was born in Bosbury in 1820 and later moved to Worcestershire. All we know about him is that he was christened on 1st June 1820 in Bosbury and his mother is given as Mary Palmer; no father is listed, and nor is one on his marriage certificate later on.

I'm hoping that he is in Herefordshire in 1841, and that some kind person will be good enough to tell me who he's living with at the time. It is however possible that he has already moved.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I cannot find any Edward Palmers in Herefordshire in the 41, I have found an Edward Palmer aged 20 living at Hill House in Dudley, Worcs and he is listed as being born out of county. He is a solicitor and I can't read what family he is living with.

Could this be him?

All the best
Kate.

Hi

Thanks very much for that rapid response!

I think that the Edward Palmer who's living with James and Susan is probably our man. We have done some research on Palmers in Bosbury and we know that James and Susannah (nee Gwinn) did have a daughter, Mary Ann Palmer, in about 1802, which would make her about the right age to have Edward illegitimately in about 1820. I'm pretty certain that James Palmer the blacksmith was also one of their children; he's in the 1851 census too.

Unfortunately it appears that Mary (Ann) Palmer has either married or died, so it's going to be pretty difficult to connect them all together conclusively.

In fact it appears that all the other Palmers belong to a different family. Thomas and Elizabeth Palmer had four sons: Thomas, William Richard and John, between 1807 and 1815 (John being the youngest). William married a Mariann Mason, which would explain the Mary Ann Palmer on his 1841 listing. Elizabeth is presumably a widow with her youngest son still living at home. I think that Thomas/Elizabeth and James/Susan are the only Palmer families producing offspring in Bosbury in the early 1800s.
