1841 & 1851 census - Morris
« on: Thursday 29 December 05 23:58 GMT (UK) »
Could someone please look in the 1841 & 1851 census for Kent for a Richard Morris born circa 1831 in Chatham. In the 1851 census, he is likely to be a labourer or a shoemaker. It is possible that his father is a WL Morris.
Ireland- Harpur, Copeland, Longridge, Hayes
Devon- Underdown, Pennington, Cox, Bishop, Harding
Cornwall- Teague, Rowe, Long, Bray, Trounson, James, Bosanko, Jewell, Pollard, Rundle, Mutton, Hand, Floyd, Rodda
Suffolk- Mills, Bird
Essex- Mills, Kent, Ruffell
Glamorgan, Wales- Morgan, David, Jones, Thomas, Watkins, Morris

Hi Eramophla

Could you please confirm which Richard MORRIS he is in a later census to help us locate the correct one?

Unfortunetly, Richard would not be located in a later British census as he moved to Australia and married here in 1853 (I am in Australia). The only censuses he would be located in for the UK are the 1841 & 1851. His marriage certificate is not very useful as the parents of the bride and groom are unrecorded (which was normal practice in Australia until about the 1860s). His age in 1853 is given as 22. We do not even know for certain which ship he arrived in Australia on. The most likely candidate is the 'Cressy' and if this was the ship, his father is likely to be a 'WL' Morris.

If there are too many Richard Morris's in the census to be listed, could you please just provide one or two who fit Richard's age? We are aware that Richard was a shoemaker for a while, so it may be a trade that he learnt from his father.

Having read your recent thread on the Australian board and seeing the link to this old thread ... have you discounted the Richard MORRIS who is the son of William and Mary MORRIS born Goudhurst, Kent c1834? This is the family in 1841 at Iden Green, Goudhurst

William Morris   44  (William is a carpenter in later censuses)
Mary Morris      45
Mary Morris      21
Harriet Morris   13
Walter Morris    11
Richard Morris    7
HO107/473/8 pg 8

and in 1851 Richard is in High St, Tunbridge
Thomas Pluck      56    Littlebury, Essex (plumber and journeyman)
Elizabeth Pluck     60    Brompton, Kent
Mary Pluck      22    Tonbridge, Kent
William Pluck      18    Tonbridge, Kent
Richard Morris    (Visitor)    17    Goudhurst, Kent (apprentice carpenter)
HO107/1615 / 15  pg 23

I can't see Richard in any later census, or a likely death, so a possible candidate for emigration.

(I realise Goudhurst is some 30km from Chatham though  :-\)

Richard MORRIS baptised 14 Sept 1833 at Goudhurst. Parents William and Mary. (on familysearch)

As you say, this may be the Richard MORRIS who arrived in SA on the Cressy, however it may not be your Richard.

I don't believe it is my Richard now, but I do appreciate your efforts. Thanks once again.
