Gedcom FTM2006 - Help please - COMPLETED - thanks
« on: Tuesday 03 January 06 20:50 GMT (UK) »
I have a lovely new relative whom I was chatting to on the phone the other night  :) and I happened to mention that hubby had bought Family Tree Maker 2006 for me as a Christmas present :D.  She said great I can Gedcom my stuff to you on the intranet ;D.  I said, wow, great, waay!! :o ;D

Erm...I've heard the term gedcom and I know it is something very obvious :-[, but when she does do it what do I do? :-\...and how will I know she has done it? ???  do I go looking or will it find me? :-[  I'm not a total idiot (well, I dont think I am :-\), but can anyone help...in simple English please :-[ ;D

I know that someone will and without telling me I'm daft, because everyone is so kind and nice on this site! ;D

Thanks

Julie :)

Hi Julie,

I know it's not for a website, but have a look at this topic

Topic: Tutorial: Step-by-Step Guide to building your website
4   b) Programs for creating webpages from GEDCOM files:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,93490.msg397241.html#msg397241
I've put a short explanation there.

GEDCOM is a particular standardised  format (plain text characters) to store family tree information, so if any family tree Program produces a GEDCOM file, this can be sent to anybody else, who can read it in their family tree program. Because it's ordinary text characters, the file is safe from viruses, etc.

Hope this helps,
Bob
