Hi Oldfield,
I found this on the Oswestry Borough Council site.."...Weston Rhyn is recorded as Westune in the Doomsday book.  'Tun' or 'ton' means  a settlement or hamlet, ' rhyn' means a hill or mount. Originally the townships of Weston Rhyn and Bron-y-garth were in the Parish of St. Martins.  In 1870 they were formed into a separate ecclesiastical district known as 'the Lodge' ( the inn still bears it's name), and then in 1898 into the civil parish of Weston Rhyn..."
Hope it helps,Julie..

Thanks Julie, that helps.  One other question:  St Martins is listed as birthplace for some of my ancesters. Am I right in assuming that it is an ecclessiastial parish and a town?  Is the church there a parish church?  Do you know where I might find a map of Shropsire in the 1800's?  I live in the United States and am not familiar with the internet sites that might show one.   Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for your help.

Hi Oldfield
Try www.old-maps.co.uk
They have the villages from all the counties on it. Some of them have street names and some don't. Its pot luck, but it might be worth a look.

Hello again Oldfield,
I have had a look and it appears that St Martin's is actually a parish.I have some people from Shropshire but naturally not from there so i am not going to be much help to you! There is however a FHS for that area they may be able to help you........www.sfhs.org.uk/
I expect you already know this but if get stuck i tend to just put the place name in my search engine with GENUKI after it and very often hit the jackpot that way!
Happy Hunting...Julie.

St Martins and Weston Rhyn are only a couple of miles apart :)

Go to www.multimap.com, type in St Martins, and you will be able to see for yourself ;)
