Palmer/Ayres Marriage Query
« on: Friday 06 January 06 10:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am seeking detail of a marriage between John Palmer born c. 1799 in Peterborough and Mary Ayres born c. 1808 also in Peterborough.
Their eldest three children known to me were all born in Ramsey, ie Mary (Sept 1838), Betsy (Mar. 1842) and John, my greatx2 grandfather in April 1844.
No sign of this marriage in the Gro register.
Any help or suggestions much appreciated.

Hi John,

Thanks for your message re 1851 census. My apologies- perhaps I should have pointed out in my request that the 1851, and John Palmer (junior)'s birth cert were the info I was starting from.

Sorry you spent time on this.

Hi Freeman

no problem - seeing the 1841 details I suspect their marriage is 1833 or before, so prior to GRO indexing which started in 1837. There is nothing on the IGI for the family. Best chance is looking at parish records. But as 1st child Frances is not born in county (of Hunts) it could well be in Peterborough.

Try posting on Northants board.

There's no marriage on the Hunts Marriage Index which terminates at 1837 so there's every chance it took place in Northants

Hi Freeman/David

There is no mention of your ancestors on Alan Clarke/Marilyn Ponting's marriage index for Northants.  :(

Cheers Sandy

Many thanks for above. I have seen this at the FRC and it looks very likely but only common child with 1851 census is Mary, aged 1, although likely the elders would have left home. I dont like "John aged 30", even allowing for "rounding" as he was 57 in 1851.
However all the censuses are slightly suspect so it is probably OK - I wish I could be sure.
Thanks again and best wishes.
