1841 & 1851 census lookup please - Francis William Moody of Attercliffe
« on: Sunday 15 January 06 00:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,
Please could someone find Francis MOODY and family in 1841 and/or 1851?
His wife was Amelia Moody (nee Grinold) and they had a daughter Eliza Anne, born in 1837.
They were married in Rotherham in 1836, but Eliza was christened in Attercliffe, so I'm guessing that's where they lived.
Any info would be most helpful.
Many thanks!

Hi Darcy,
That's great! Many thanks. That's exactly the area I thought they'd be in.
I wonder if Joseph was his brother?
Cheers,
Gazza

Glad I could help Gazza. ;D

It's quite possible that Joseph was William's brother.

Lots of big families back then and children born over a span of 20 odd years was fairly common.

1841 census
ref: piece 1333/1 e.d. 4 folio 59F
Worksop Road
(Attercliffe)

Willm MOODY 30 cutler
Amelia MOODY 35
Elizabeth MOODY 3
Frank MOODY 10m
/
Richd GRINOLD 15 cutler
George GRINOLD 10 cutler

all born in county

This Worksop Road  later became part of Attercliffe Road.

I can't find Jospeh in the 1841 index. Note that he is only 25 in 1851, only 15 years older than the oldest child - there may be an earlier marriage for Hannah.

Thanks Hugh! GRINOLD is an unusual name, isn't it!
Very grateful for your help.

Your comment about GRINOLD prompted me to think I had looked up that name at some point, and I found that 5 years ago I had sent somebody the 1851 household complete with MOODYs   :D

I also looked at the original (to see how accurate I was 5 years ago  ;D ) and found that the listing above has the wrong ages for Joseph and Hannah: they were 43 and 31 respectively. (there was a slight possibility she was 37 - there is a tally mark obscuring the top of the numeral, but '7's are clearly different on the rest of the page).

I had noted that these households in 1851 are in a group of 9 of which 3 say 'Townwell Yard' and 6 are blank in the address column (Joseph's is blank). The group is preceeded and succeeded by addresses in Worksop Road. So they may be in the same place as in 1841.

Thanks Hugh! I'm finding 'new' Attercliffe ancestors all the time.
I must also mention that my dad is enjoying reading some information you put on a website, in answer to a query someone had made about Ecclesall Bierlow.
All that kind of background info is really helpful!
Best regards,
Gazza

Hi.

You may have these, but if not they should help.

Burials.

18/4/1872 Amelia MOODY 68 wife of Fra.Wm.Hill Top Attercliffe. Attercliffe cemetery grave no:B1162nc
24/10/1880 Francis N.MOODY aged 71, Cutler, 32 Alma St.buried in same grave.

5/3/1929 Francis William MOODY 69 Labourer, 40 Milford St. Tinsley Park cemetery R90c

These are transcriptions, so the "N" in Francis N could well be a W.   ???
