HORNE
« on: Sunday 15 January 06 07:39 GMT (UK) »
"My Grandfather was born in Natal  South Africa in 1850. He fought with the British Regiment against the Zulus in the 1879 Isandhlawana War in South Africa.

It appears that he was a volunteer and believe he fought with the 45th Regiment and he survived the war.

My investigations in SA have been fruitless as I have been told by the SA Military Archives tat when the British forces left SA they took all their records with them.

My Grandfathers name was JOHN JOSEPH HORN OR JOHN JOSEPH HORNE.
As his surname was changed during his lifetime by adding an E.

He died in 1929 and there was an article in the local newspaper SA. commemorating his service in this war and he was one of the last survivors."

Please if you can verify any information or proof regarding this matter, please let me know.

Can any one help.

Eddie

My grandfather was Ernest Horne from Moreton in Marsh.  His family ran a grocery business.  I am interested in hearing from anyone connected with this family.

Hi,
Just come across this thread - better late than never.
Eddie, what details does the local newspaper article give?

If he served in the Zulu War he's most unlikely to be in the 45th Regiment since they weren't involved!
If he was at Isandhlwana he's most likely to be 24th Regiment. Looking at the medal roll, there is a possible candidate:
1673 Private J. Horn, 24th Regt
If the article gives more details, I can look further.

Neil
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

Hi, my name is Alick Donald Horne and I came across your website about two brothers - one going to Australia and the other coming to South Africa.  My father was Alick James Bruce Horne and he had a sister Linda, and brothers Angus, Peter Donald. My grandfather - I cannot remember his name  - was a gifted baker and something of an artist..   If you need any more information, please let me know and I will see what I can find. Are the Horne's related to you? Alick

Hi Alick,

very suprised to get your message as I had forgotton I'd posted the question!!.Have not been on Rootschat for quite a while (forgot how good it is).

The Alick/Alex/Alexander(I suspect the latter)Horne I am looking for was born in Cardiff,S,Wales,U.K in 1895--his parents were Charles Horne (Master Mariner) and Barbara Petrie both from Banff in Scotland.

Alicks siblings were =Charles born Scotland (emigrated to NZ)--William, James(my grandfather)born Scotland--Margaret born Scotland--Barbara born Middlesbrough--Mabel born Cardiff(emigrated to USA) and Alick born Cardiff.

Not sure when Alick emigrated to SA,but could be possibly after  WW1.

Do you recognise any of these names-if so would love to hear from you.

Regards,
Marysma

While in Cape Town, for the funeral of my elder brother, we discovered a host of plaques dedicated to various members of the Horne family.  This was in St John's in Cape Town. I have asked my sister-in-law to do a follow up to see what that was all about.  I have photographs that I took and will have them scanned and pass on to you.
