Hawick War Memorial-William Grant
« on: Tuesday 17 January 06 21:21 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know of names of lost ones listed on Hawick War Memorial? My granny always said her Dad William Grant was listed on it (d 1916 aged 37); he came from Melrose and then lived in Hawick but ended up in Northumberland and died fighting for Somerset light Infantry

   hi anne
hawick war memorial is unusual in that it doesn't have any names on it.
they are all on the roll of honour housed in the museum which is next to the memorial. there is a William Grant of Somerset Light Infantry on it .
also in a book entitled Hawick and The Great War 1914;1919 there is a photo
of Private William Grant  Somerset light infantry, killed in action , son of Mr
George Grant 2 Dickson st Hawick, he was 36yrs and married, and is survived
by his widow and four children.

Bless you-do you know I went to Hawick and found the memorial-only trouble was the museum bit was closed!

You have given me some great info-I have a piccie of William and his wife and 4 kids including my granny but it would be lovely to see the stuff in Hawick.

I think I'll go tomorrow

Thank you very much

One more thing.. is the book with the photo in in the museum? If so, I'll send my Dad down there-give him something to do!

Hi Bougie

Did you get a personal e-mail from me at all? I am not very au fait with that bit? Was wondering if you would be willing to e-mail me the photo and any details from your book of great-grandpops William? I just wanted to send a copy to my nephew who is going on school trip soon to war graves in Belgium and hoped to give him something in case I don't make it down to Hawick before then.

If not, don't worry; if yes, much appreciated
