Rakes or Raikes
« on: Friday 17 September 04 20:46 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My ancestor was Charles George Raikes, b Bath 1846. Father was William (I think)

Is he on the 1851 census, and who is he living with?

Hi TreforR,

I've checked the 1851 census for both William & Charles RAIKES,RAYKES,RAKES & REAKES.

Areas covered were Somerset, Gloucestershire & Bristol, Wiltshire, Devonshire & Warwickshire.

Sorry to say, no sign of either that go anywhere near your dates & places

Cheers
Geoff

Would your search have picked up Rake?  I have found a GRO reference that I think fots and have sent for the certificate. His surname is RAke on the index.

I have also  found a reference in the IGI to his parents being this couple

Groom William Rake status Bach of otp, – Bride Ann Savage status Spins of otp, – married on 23 Nov 1818 at parish Bath St Michael by Banns

This seems unlikely as his mother would have been at least 45 at the time of his birth!

Thanks for taking the trouble to look.

Hi Trefor,
This is the only possibility of being the family your looking for. Taken from Beavington's Transcriptions 1851 Somerset Census.
Bath St Michael's, HO/107/1941

205
Black Swan Court
RAKE William 55 Auctioneers Porter Bath, Som.
Ann 52 Laundress Bath, Som.
Caroline 28 Dressmaker Bath, Som.
Mary 17 School Assistant Bath, Som.
Robert 14 Errand Boy Bath, Som.
William 7 Scholar Bath, Som.
George 4 Scholar Bath, Som.

If ages on the census can be believed, Mum was 48yrs at George's birth.

Cheers
Geoff
