Gallacher in Dundee - trace to Ireland
« on: Thursday 19 January 06 20:28 GMT (UK) »
Trying to trace family into Ireland - don't know what to do next.  I have my gg grandfather Michael Gallacher as b. Ireland on the 1991census - died in Barry.  His mother was Ann Gallacher (maiden name Boland) down as head of family in that census - husband Thomas presumably dead (they are both from Ireland).  No trace in 1881 census for Dundee, and throughout Scotland - used Scotlandspeople.  Also can't find Thomas' death.  Can I do anything from the Dundee end ? (I live in England)  Also tried IGI Ireland - no success.   Any suggestions would be great.

Bryan:
Maybe you could try the Irish spelling, "Gallagher"

Hi
many thanks for the replies.  Firstly, tried as many different variations of Gallacher as I can think of !   Next, dates that I have.  1891 census for 6 Howkhill (I think) Dundee.  Shows Ann Gallacher as the head age 50 born Ireland. No husband.  Children Mary 25 - oddly born in Dundee according to the census.  But other younger children Michael age 24 born Ireland.  Joseph age 20 born Ireland.  John age 17 born Ireland.  Thomas age 14 born Ireland.   I found Michael my gg grandfather died 3rd feb 1940 in Charles St. Carnoustie - father Thomas Gallacher mother Ann Boland.  Ann Gallacher died 5th jan 1914 in  7 John St. St. Mary Dundee, death cert says widow of Thomas Gallacher. Her father was Conner Bolan, wife Cathrine Bolan nee - can't read.  Nothing in the 1881 or 1871 census for these Gallachers.  So I can find nothing for Thomas Gallacher (the father) -  I guess he would have come over from Ireland with Ann; but maybe she came alone?  But again I presume she was married in Ireland.  I have the family from then on, what I am after is the Ireland path and/or did they come to Dundee from another part of Scotland - Glasgow ?  The oldest, Mary,  born in Dundee - is that a mistake ?  I can find no record.  Please any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks  bryan
