Cambridge Marriage - CLAYTON- Completed
« on: Thursday 19 January 06 21:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

According to the IGI a John Clayton married Mary Norgett at Cambridge, St Sepulchre 16/6/1670. If anyone has access to the originals I would like to know if there is any mention of their fathers names, witnesses & whether the bridge & groom could sign their names or put an X

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

A 1670 marriage in a parish register would have none of the information you seek. Not until 1754 did marriages have signatures of those marrying and their witnesses and also other information such as whether they were of the parish or another parish, bachelor, spinster or widowed (though you would usually get but not always whether either partner was widowed on a 1670 marriage). From July 1837 onwards with the start of civil registration, marriages also had father's name and occupations and occupations of those marrying.

In 1670 the register entry would just be two names, which parish they came from if it was different from the one they were marrying in, plus if the marriage was by licence as opposed to by banns. If it was by licence you may just be lucky enough to find a marriage licence might still survive. If it does Cambridge RO would hold the licence. That would give you the ages of those marrying (or possibly just stated over 21) and which parish they came from. If either was under age on marriage (under 21) it would also give you the name of their legal guardian who was giving permission for the marriage.

For more information for what you will find in parish registers at what date try

Phillimore's transcription reads
John Cleyton of Wood Ditton and Mary Norgett of Newmargett on 16 June 1670.

And as Valda says, that is more than you usually get pre 1754!

Regards

David

Thanks Guys,

Of course you are right Valda, that was a severe case of wishful thinking getting in the way of reality! But thanks David, the 'of Wood Ditton' was crucial, so thanks very much.

Thanks.  I found that, but hoping someone may have had an idea of her birth.
