Help with a SOUTH AFRICAN
« on: Friday 20 January 06 12:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi Guys

I have reserected my interest again in finding out who my GGGrandfather was.

He was Called George MOSS born East London, South Africa 1893.

I have all his old war papers which list just about everything he did.  The only thing it does not list is his date of birth which is proving to be difficult to order his Birth certificate from S.A.

The question is where do I start looking for him coming over to the UK from S.A. after WW1.

I was hoping he would have to apply to become a citizen or something.

I have checked the National Archives for Naturalization but it came up with nothing.  I read on here you didn't always have to.

Surely he must have been registered somewhere as he was South African?

I have his marriage certificate to my GGGmother which was done at the Leicester Reg office in 1917.

Can someone steer me in the correct direction please.

Thankyou

Paul

Hi Paul!

I'm just wondering if you could backtrack a bit - and go back to South Africa and see if you can pick up his trail! you've probably already been on the South Africa board but if not - try it!! here's another site that may be of interest and maybe it will give you some ideas

Hi Annie

Thanks for the input!!

I have already been there and haven't found anythign yet.  I did find on my GGrandfathers war papers that he was born in East London, SA and he was C of E religion.

The only Cof E church in East london is called St John's which used to be called Grace chapel I believe.

I'm waiting for someone to check the registers for me.

I still think his father was British and emigrated from the Uk all those years ago.

I have also emailed a few papers to see if they will publish a letter fro me in the local paper.  Someone must know something??
