1841 look up please, Sawtry
« on: Saturday 21 January 06 18:41 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for anyone with the surname Upex in Sawtry please.

If there is a name index for the county I would be interested in any other Upex families listed, I don't think there would be more than two or three.

I can't help with the 1841 query but am interested that you are looking for a Upex family.
William Upex born Sawtry about 1846 married the widow of one of my Purser family.  I believe he was the son of Jonathan Upex and his wife Mary.
Who are you interested in?

Joy, Larkin, Twort, Baker, Whibley - Brenchley and Horsmonden area Kent
Fewell and Speller - Essex and London
Headington and Bateman - London
Feltwell - Norfolk and London
Lewin - India and NZ
Evan-Thomas - Wales and London
Purser and Cook - Hunts

Barbara

As there are so few Upex families I'm trying to find if there's a connection between them all.

My husbands ancestors are from Warmington and I'm trying to find if the Sawtry lot are connected.

Googling the name, I have found that a John and a Richard were on the Warminster Militia list of 1777.

The earliest Upex family I can find at Sawtry, Richard Upex buried at Sawtry in 1821 aged 86,  his wife Elizabeth was buried in Sawtry 1818 aged 81.  Two of their children are buried there, Richard in 1768 and John in 1770.

I have another burial record, 22 Aug 1807, Sarah dau. of Jonathan and Sarah. Possibly this Jonathan was the father of the Jonathan you mention?

Thanks Gar, you're a star!

I already know Mary's husband was Watkin. And Jonathan was the father of Jonathan so that helps Barbara too.

Allnat, Gar and Sandy

When I first came upon the name Upex I thought it must be quite rare.
Thank you for all the Sawtry info. Isn't it wonderful when you get three generations on a census return!
I have access to all the other census information, thank you.
