Some advice please - Business Records
« on: Sunday 22 January 06 18:55 GMT (UK) »
I am keen to trace details of my Great-Great- Grandfather's watch/jewellery business in the Jewellery Quarter (Hockley) of Birmingham.

Founded: by Thomas P Leighton somewhere between 1841 and 1851. Survived until somewhere between 1881 and 1891 - my Great-Grandfather and his brother who were running it by then having fallen out!   The 1881 census refers to Francis H Leighton (born 1848) as "Watch Material Manufacturer" - but that is his domestic entry not that of the business.   :(

I can't get to Birmingham regularly to research so wonder whether anyone might have any suggestions as to where I might start on the internet.  Any help or ideas would be very much appreciated.   :)

Very many thanks; have not previously visited historicaldirectories.org.  Really useful material.  Discovered an entry AND a substantial three-quarter page advertisement for his business in the Commercial Directory for Birmingham for 1867!    However, there's clearly a lot more to browse through ; should keep me busy for a while.

Thanks again.  :)

Hi

Just read your enquiry but see it as a long time ago. I’m first time poster but it’s apparent we might be related as Thomas Patrick is also a GG Grandfather. I have loads of info plus a big brick wall with Francis Henry Leighton. Let me know if I can help further.
