A.T.A. Chatham
« on: Tuesday 24 January 06 19:56 GMT (UK) »
John joined the Navy in 1903 and served for 5 years before being "Transferred to A.T.A. Chatham B5331" in 1908.  His service record starts again in August 1914.  Can someone tell me what the transfer meant, please.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

I don't really know anything about the navy and their way of doing things BUT....

that sounds like he'd done a fixed term in the regular navy ( or what ever) and then gone on reserve until being called up again at the start of WW1, it would certainly work that way if he'd have ben army

(Chatham is a big naval base IIRC)
