Free online newspapers for parts of US from 1934 forward
« on: Wednesday 25 January 06 02:23 GMT (UK) »
HI all

I came across this site that might be of use to someone.

https://www.smalltownnewspaper.com/smalltownpapers/jsp/stphome.jsp

it is free to register and you can search by keyword (surname, whole name, place, etc). It is quite easy to use and you get to see the whole newspaper page with your keywords highlighted to make it easy to read. There are many newspapers from many States in this newspaper archive.

Good luck

Sounds like this would be a good site for research. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to work tonight.

Still not working today for me ...

Message I get is "problem with the site security certificate. Please close and do not use this site".  I have no idea what the above means.

Hi yn9man

What it's saying is that the site uses a security certificate to encode its data for transmission but the expiry date for the certificate is past. (Oct 2006)

I must admit that I always ignore these warnings and continue anyway - my browser (Firefox) certainly doesn't suggest that you close the window, nor does IE6. Suggests to me one of Microsoft's increasing overstatements, but it's up to you whether you think an expired security certificate (when most sites, including my own, don't have one in the first place) is sufficient grounds to avoid a site
 ;D

Regards

Angela

Yes, it is working for me now, and I did get that message - from IE7.  Just ignored it and opened anyway.  It is Microsoft going over the top again, I think.
