Help with Bowen Family
« on: Friday 27 January 06 09:22 GMT (UK) »
Just received my grandad's birth certificate and now have my great great grandmother's maiden name.  Struggling to find her.
Her name was Hannah Bowen born  c1864. in Llanelly.  I have found one that looks promising on the 1881 census RG11/5374, but searching further back I can't find her.  Even searching for a date of birth has come up with nothing.  Have found her marriage date in 1884 to William Thomas.

Can anyone help.

Thanks
Thomas - Llanelly, Stephens -Llannelly, Bowen - Llanelly. Smith - London, Pyle - London.

Hi sandyglen,
my Bowens come from Llanelli ( well my husband's lot do - his father's mother)
There are lot of Bowen's around this area. The Bowen name seems to be very concentrated in Llanelli and surrounding the LLanelli areas in Carmarthenshire.

What is on your grandfathers birth certificate? The address he was born at etc. I  assume you have some later censuses of Hannah to say she was born in Llanelli?- which censuses do you have her in, and can you post the info, ref numbers?
If you can start at the very beginning , list the information you do have about Hannah , it should be easier  for rootschatters to try and look for her for you.

Hope this of some help :)

Not sure if any of these Bowen's are connected to mine but the Hannah Bowen b. 1863 was with her family on 1881 Census at Cemetery Lane, Llanelly, Carms.
John Bowen (Head) age 44
Mary (wife) Age 43
Hannah Dau. Age 17
Mary A. Dau. Age 13
Jessie Dau. Age 11
William Son Age 8
Sarah J. Dau. Age t5
Jessie Bowen - Sister - Age 41
All born Wales.
Family of Boarders - John Barreby with Wife Elizabeth and two children.

1881 Census is free on FindMyPast

Still trying to sort my connection to Bowen family. Elizabeth Bowen married Thomas Lewis 1799 at St.Elli, Llanelly, Carms. Daughter Jane Lewis married William David 1823 - St.Elli, Llanelly.
Anyone with connection?

syljun,

I too am trying to figure out the connection we have to the Bowen family.

In Five roads Horeb chapel we have an Elizabeth Bowen who is buried in a family vault alongside the Reverend John Griffiths Phillips, Charles L Thomas' wife Margaret Thomas

I have found that my Great Grandmother in law could have been buried here had she wanted.
Her name was Elizabeth Anne Rees  ( born1866-1963)
On the 1881 census Elizabeth Bowen, age 65, known as the Aunt on the census, lived with
E.A. Thomas age 12
E.A. Rees age 14
JG Phillips was 50 years of age.

I don't know if any of this helps you but would appreciate any information or insights you have relating to this.
Thank You

Hi, Still have not sorted the Bowen family but feel sure that the Bowen, Lewis and perhaps Phillips mentioned are somehow connected. Freereg has a Baptism of a Hannah Lewis 16th Nov.1814 at Henllan Amgoed - Grandaughter to John Phillip. Abode Glandy Landisilio Parish.
Anyone know why Grandfather and not Parents had Hannah baptised.
If she is one of mine I know her Father was still around on several Census.

Hi Syljun,

The parents would have baptised the child, but in the eyes of the Minister, the grandfather was a more important person than the father. I have seen it before when the grandfather has been a deacon or elder in the Chapel.
Depending on which branch of the Phillip family, they were a prominent family in the area.
