UK Emigrants to Port Phillip: STALLWORTHY
« on: Saturday 28 January 06 08:48 GMT (UK) »

Hi

In my direct line I have quite a large Stallworthy family. I saw an old post on another forum from an Australian descendent but his email address has disappeared. He said, "My maternal grandmother was born a Stallworthy. Her father and his parents and three siblings, as well as other relatives, a total of 33 arrived in Port Phillip (Melbourne) in July 1853, aboard the ship Richard."

I didn't know I was missing so many!

Last seen in Middlesex, 1851, parents born Buckinghamshire:
Edward Stallworthy, b. 1815
Mary A Stallworthy, wife, b. 1817
John E Stallworthy, b. 1843
Richard E Stallworthy, b. 1849
George Stallworthy, b. 1850

I've found Edward, and his son John E, on the NSW BDMs, but I can't find the ship Richard arriving 1853, let alone any passenger lists and certainly not 28 other family members!  :D

Would be most grateful for any information. :)

Cheers
Koromo

Hi Koromo

Unassisted Passengers into Victoria lists 7 Stalworthy passengers -

STALWORTHY C, 38
STALWORTHY C, 27
STALWORTHY E, 26
STALWORTHY E, 39
STALWORTHY M, 41
STALWORTHY R, 34
STALWORTHY W, 29 (all on the RICHARD July 1853)

Also - STALLWORTHY Arthur A, 28 Dec 1889 Bungaree
STALLWORTHY Wallis, 25 Nov 1922 Demosthenes

http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=23

You mentioned 33 members, maybe the others have different surnames.

There is an entry on First Families 2001 website for Edward Hutton Stallworthy born Wheatley, Oxfordshire, died 1899 Young, arrived on Richard in 1853. His wife, Mary Ann Viccars and eight children listed. Was this the entry you saw as there is a contact email.

Hope this is helpful

Also, your family may have had service records

http://www.naa.gov.au       (Recordsearch/Search as Guest)

The Embarkation Roll is quite useful as it lists next of kins name and address

Thank you Cazay and Genni. I've struck gold on the Service records already ... and what's even better, they survived WWI and returned to Australia.   ;D

The births in Australia of Edward and Mary's children are perfect, as are the marriages! :) :)

Arthur A and Wallis Stallworthy are definitely mine, however, the list of unassisted immigrants with the initials has me really confused. I can, with a bit of creativity, fit names to them, but if those are their ages then there aren't obvious parents - it's as if they are all siblings. Very odd!

I Googled for the First Families 2001 site, and found the family there.  It has been put in by the same fellow whose post I saw, so I'll try his email address.

Thank you both very much for all your help.

Best wishes
Koromo

Koromo

I'll be going to the SLV or Pub Records in the next couple of weeks will check the passenger list for you.

Can tell you though the 'Richard' left from a Foreign port and not a British one.  The 'F' on the index indicates that.

Cheers

Hi Genni

I think I'm being a bit slow on the uptake here!

When you say "the 'Richard' left from a Foreign port" are you referring to the R Stallworthy in the list that Cazay posted? Do you think he might be the Richard Ezra Stallworthy that you gave me so much info about?

Thank you so much for offering to check the pasenger list. That would be wonderful.

Regards
Koromo

The "Richard" I refer is the Ship.
