Hi Jane,

No worries, just emailed it. I'll keep you all in the loop, but don't hold your collective breaths for a quick response.

If anyone wants some ideas about research sources in NZ visit the "Emigrants to NZ" page and read the sticky posts on top.

Hi all,

My genealogy guru has suggested some other ideas. Many emigrants from ENG in the 1860's went to AUS, with the most common ports being Sydney NSW or Melbourne VIC, and that only some years later did some move on to NZ. Hannah and William might have done this and either brought it over with them or died in AUS and a descendant brought the sampler to NZ when they elected to emigrate from AUS.

My guru also wondered if the sampler might have been brought to NZ within the last 10-20 years or so, possibly not even by a descendant, as samplers were/are sought-after items at auctions.

I checked the website Unassisted Immigration to Victoria http://proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=23 and found a W BRIERLY and W BRIERLEY both aged 22 who arrived on the ship Success in Nov 1861. Right age, but are they the same individual? Port of departure and ship details not given.

NSW BDM is also on-line. http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm

I think we should try to trace the person who discovered the sampler and pick their brains, if at all possible. The Village Museum didn't mention when it was discovered or submitted to them, and the dates could be years apart.

All good theories & ideas, Riley.  Don't forget we can't find them in 1871 or 1881, so they could well have left the country.  I'm still going to try & see if I can find evidence of them here.  When I've exhausted thatm we'll try the Oz route.
Still nothing from the Castle Combe Museum ???

Thanks, Jane

The museum has made contact...here's the email,

Thank you so much for your very interesting e-mail and, first of all,
apologies for the delay in replying; it took me a couple of days to read the
e-mail and since then I have forwarded to the other members of the museum
committee.

I have been watching with intested the developing thread on rootschat over
the last couple of days. It certainly does seem to be an interesting and
effective network, I know see there are requests for more information.

I still have the e-mail address of the person who donated the sampler, it
was June 2003 when she made contact hence I do not know if the e-mail is
still a valid way of getting in touch. I will send the web link to the
infomation to her and see if I can find out any more information about when
and where the sampler was discovered.

I don't believe we have any information further to that which we published
on the web initially, which you have exceeded already, as regards the family
history.

Thank you once again for the most interesting information, and I will be in
touch.

Best regards,

John Mackelden
