Identifying an old Photograph
« on: Wednesday 01 February 06 14:58 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me to identify the attached photograph.   Hopefully someone will recognise the uniform and may be able to give me some information on service, regiment and potential dates?

I have no dating information on the photo - it came in a bundle of old photographs from a distant relative.  The only information I do have is that it was taken by the "Victoria Portrait Rooms', 13 Rutland Street, Leicester (Photographers = Mr & Mrs R. R. Fish).

Any help would be v ery welcome ....

Thanks,

The man in question is a sergeant with long service stripes on his right arm. This picture is definitely pre ww1. his medal could be Boer war related but Ive got a feeling this pictures older. Could you zoom in on the medal? the ribbon should give it away.

hope this helps

From the shape of its suspension and ribbon, it looks like he's wearing the Indian Mutiny Medal, 1857-59. The ribbon bears 5 alternately coloured vertical stripes, of which 3 are white and 2 red.

Zooming in on the medal doesn't yield much other than a big blur - have tried some enhancements on the attached but not sure it helps.

Let me know if it does!

Check out this page. Your man's medal doesn't have a clasp though.

Julia do you know anything on  this man? if you have a rough date of birth we have a medal era from swampy. So we're talking minimum age of 16 in 1857 so thats 1841. I would age the man around his fourties so thats 1880s which fits the uniform.

so possibly dated to the 1880s.

As it stands at the moment, I know nothing about him - I've just inherited an old photo album which contains at least 200 (what look like) Victorian studio photographs.  I do know who the album came from, but will now go back to my history and see if anyone fits with the dates you've suggested.

It's obviously an army uniform then, but do you know which regiment?

While I'm mulling, perhaps you could have a look at this one too - it appears much later on in the album.

The first image I think could be Scottish related based on hat although i could be wrong. The second based again on his hat i reckon maybe an artilleryman, this pic is from i would say a little later but still victorian.

post as many pics a s you want! Im happy to have a look at them an im sure others are to!
