HTTP Apache Redundant Slashes DoS. Advice Needed Please
« on: Wednesday 01 February 06 15:20 GMT (UK) »
I have used Nortons Internet Security package for years but now the subscription is due for renewal. Being as Nortons are saying they no longer will give support on my older edition I have purchased the 2006 edition (on disc)..

This is my problem, on installation my present edition is deleted and after installation  of 2006 you go on line to get the updates to bring everything up to date. What I am concerned about is that for the last few days I am being told that this Intrusion: HTTP Apache Redundant Slashes DoS keeps trying to get in my computer. It happened again today when I had been on line for 10 minutes. What if it tries when I am downloading  the new updates?

On looking on the Symantec web site it tells you to update to the latest version of Apache.  I do not understand what they mean, I cannot find any reference to it on my computer, that is probably through my ignorance ???

Any advice and help would be gratefully received.

Many Thanks,

Frances

You don't need to worry ... Norton does not disable itself while updating through the downloads ... that bit happens while you are offline.

Apache is a web server program ... possibly the most widey used in the world and this problem is an old one (version 1.24 and older) if you are not running any form of web server yourself then it shouldn't affect you ... if you are, I would suggest upgrading to the latest version.

Hi  Falkyrn,

Thank-you for explaining that to me. Being as for some reason I have had forteen
alerts in the past two days I did not see how I could get a download to complete quick enough. I have over a week before my subscription runs out so will now go ahead without worrying.

Thanks again for your advice it has put my mind at rest!

Hi Jan,

I thought I was the only one who did not understand, but I did think I could not be the only one getting these alerts. I have to admit to knowing very little about the inside working of computers!!

Falkryn's computer brains
.... my wife finds that very funny indeed.

This actual attack is a denial of service (D o S) attack against servers running Apache basically its from "hackers" adding ///////  to the end of a web address. The server devotes memory to deleting the slashes from the address and the more of them the more memory it devotes to the task until the system crashes. But if you are not running any servers then you don't need to worry ... although its always advisable to give your system a regular scan

Frances :)
