Hampton, Laurencekirk
« on: Sunday 05 February 06 19:36 GMT (UK) »
Between a third cousin and myself we have a lot of information on the name HAMPTON in Laurencekirk.
Any Hampton ancestry out there?

Hi

In my tree I have a Isobel Hampton who married John Crab on 17/3/1753 at Fordoun, Kincardine.

I was trying to find a birth date for Isobel but without success - the nearest would have made her almost 30 at marriage and i thought that was a bit old at that time. It was in Laurencekirk!

If this links in with any information you have I'd be delighted to hear from you.

Hi :

Sorry I took so long to respond.  I looked at my resources and records I didn't find an Isobel whatever spelling in that time frame in my Hampton lines.  I see your dilemma in that there isn't an Isobel that fits that birth time for Kincardine shire. That can only mean she may have been an interloper or in a parish that had later records.

Hi Foggyman

I wonder if this is John McBay and Jean Hampton in 1851:

John MacBey 35, fisherman, b. St Cyrus, Kincardine
Jane MacBey 34, b. Benholm, Kincardine
Ann MacBey 11, b. Benholm, Kincardine
Margret MacBey 1, b. Benholm, Kincardine

Address: Middle Street, Johnshaven, Benholm

There is a daughter showing for them on IGI in 1855, the first year of official registration in Scotland. Worth your while looking at that cert. on Scotlands People. Birth certs that year ran over two pages of the register and should include, where and when parents married, their place of birth, ages, father's occupation, also how many children they'd had since the marriage (alive or deceased/ boy or girls):

ELIZABETH MC BEY  Birth: 03 JUN 1855  Benholm
Parents:JOHN MC BEY and JEAN HAMPTON

This is the closest I can see for Jane on IGI:

JEAN HAMPTON Birth: 09 DEC 1815/ Christening:29 DEC 1815 in Benholm, Kincardine
Parents   DAVID HAMPTON and ELISABETH MILNE

If she died in Scotland, hopefully her death cert. should confirm parents.

Not seeing anything at all on Catherine Hampton on the censuses as yet unfortunately.

Strange that there are two John McBays, both marrying Hampton girls on the same date and place  ???
