1805? SUSSEX MARRIAGE - JAMES BUTCHER.
« on: Tuesday 07 February 06 05:59 GMT (UK) »
:) Hello and Greetings from Queensland, Australia.
Could some kind person please look for the marriage (before 1807?) of JAMES BUTCHER (b.1777/8, Thakeham) to a MARTHA (surname unknown).
JAMES' parents were JOHN BUTCHER & SARAH HAMMOND (via IGI).
The 1851 Census (Patching Village) states JAMES is a Gardener Labourer.  His wife MARTHA (83yrs) b. Washington.  Their daughter SARAH (44yrs) b. Storrington.
Would there be an earlier census record than 1841?
Any help with this family would be very much appreciated.
                                                                Carol

:D  Many thanks to you both, for your reply.
Do you know whether there was any earlier Census taken in Sussex, before 1841?
If JAMES BUTCHER and MARTHA CAREY were married in 1799, I would think there would have been children born before SARAH in approx. 1807.
  Thanks again.

Apart from a few notable exceptions the census records taken before 1841 do not record names, only numbers in the household.   Parish records are the way to find out the children I think.  If you can find where Sarah was baptised then you can look for other children.   You can get the film to search at your nearest LDS centre.  They are worldwide and listed on www.familysearch.org      It is always worth searching that before you start as they may be online on the IGI but it is not full coverage and many parishes are only available by getting the film of the register.  It look as if they srayed in the Storrington area.

Hi Carol,
This is the marriage of James's parents from the Sussex Marriage Index.  The witness, Susannah Penfold might be useful.

Thakeham, West Sussex,   15 Apr 1771
 John BUTCHER, bach
 Sarah HAMMOND, sp botp (B)
 witness, Susannah PENFOLD

:D  Thank you Everyone for your help.
I have ordered the Storrington and Thakeham films from our local LDS.  So I will be kept busy wading through them, when they arrive.
I find this website just fantastic.  There are so many willing and helpful people just waiting to assist!  It's great!
