Thank you so much Angela and Supersan

Found at last!

Don't think Elizabeth remarried.....I found an entry for William's baptism on the LDS site and it just gave his mothers name Eliza LANE.  There was an Elizabeth LANE bapt. West Lavington in 1812 so it is possible this is she.

Can't find a registration for his birth on either free BMD or Ancestry............ so would it be worth applying for a Birth Certificate giving just the year and Mothers name?

thank you again

Myfi

Hello Myfi!

I was just having another look round for your William and his mum and found the link with the 1851 census  ;D

The IGI has an entry for the marriage of Elizabeth Lane and John Shadwell at Great Cheverell on 8th April 1844. So it looks like William was illegitimate but Elizabeth subsequently remarried.... What's puzzling is that there's no record of a GRO reference on the BMD indexes, so any certificate for that would have to be ordered on the basis of the marriage date. It should give Eliza(beth)'s father's name though!

As far as asking for William's birth certificate on the basis of the year and mother's name - I think it's probably not really worth while as he may well not have been registered at that early date and anyway the certificate wouldn't tell you any more than the christening record does  :(

Hope this helps a bit

Best wishes

Angela

Hi Myfi

What a colourful family  ;D

The Devizes house of correction must have been quite a busy place - my great great grandfather Uzziah Zealy(Sealey) was there in 1817 for "having feloniously stolen, taken, and carried away one hempen sack, and four bushels of unwinnowed wheat". He got 12 months hard labour.

Times were very difficult for the rural poor then....
