WWI Battle of Jutland Sailors
« on: Saturday 25 September 04 15:49 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm fairly new to tracing my family history so any help would be much appreciated.  I believe that one of my ancestors (Ernest Edward Hills, b 1889, Margate, Kent) fought in the Battle of Jutland in WWI - he was a sailor.

I have traced him on the 1881/1891 and 1901 census but I would like to find out more information about his part in this battle.

Can anyone recommend any websites where I would be able to find this information?

Many Thanks

Hi
I think the first step would be to apply for your ancesters service records. This should give you the name of the ship he served on

This site as a great deal of info re searching Navy records

http://www.angelfire.com/de/BobSanders/Site.html

this is a report of the battle

http://www.lib.byu.edu/~rdh/wwi/1916/jutlandb.html

this site also gives a good account of the battle

http://www.worldwar1.co.uk/jutland.html

these are just a few sites of the hundreds on the web

hope this helps, but I suspect not until you know the ship he served on

good luck

Hi,
If he was an officer or decorated with any serious medal you might find it here:
