Trying to find out where the surnames
Dorain and Delap come from....can anyone help me? :)
On the canals...Turton, Wood, Mann,Cartwright, Neale, Grainger, Littlemore, Taylor. etc
Black country ancestors.... Beesley, Tranter, Fellows Barker, Perry, Evans, Glover.
also researching Birtwisle and Darby.

From my trusty "The Surnames of Ireland" by MacLysaght I can tell you the following:

(O) Doran , Dorran, O Deorain.  One of the "Seven Septs (clans/families) of Leix'. and the great brehon family of Leinster.  The earlier form was O Deoradhain, the word denoting exiled person.  See Irish Familes Map Leix and Westmeath.

Delap - See Lappin

(O) Lappin O Lapain  A Donegal sept now mainly found in Tyrone and Armagh.  It is sometimes changed to Delap, which is used as a synonym for the Scottish Dunlop in Counties Derry and Fermanagh.  Delap is also on record in Connemara and Mayo.

To search for the distribution of a surname during the Griffiths VAluation I recommend this site. It also shows alternate spellings

Dorain  is only in Antrim. Delap is more wifely spread.

I have families in Sunderland with the names Delap and Dorian and didn't know whether they were Irish......
