tinkler 1841 census
« on: Monday 13 February 06 18:21 GMT (UK) »
I as told that Thomas TINKLER  aged 10 was in the 1841 census in the Hartlepool area. I have searched the 1841 census for that area a number of times but can not find him. I do have the marriage of Thomas in 1854 and it states  on the certificate that his father John TINKLER was deceased. I would really like to know if he was with his father in the 1841 census . Any help would great and it would sort out another problem. Adamand

Hi

Try playing about with the index at DurhamRecordsOnline

http://www.durhamrecordsonline.com/index.php

There is an 8 year old Thomas TINKLER in Hartlepool 1841, but no John that could be his father.

There is a 10 year old Thomas TINKLER in Auckland 1841 and several Johns who may or may not be his father.

If you find a record you want you need to pay a small fee to have the transcription sent to you by email.

Failing that - have you tried contacting whoever originally gave you the information ?

My elusive Thomas Tinkler. I know he was born in Greatham in 1831. I know he was married to Alithea Ward at Sunderland in 1854. I know he had children born in Durham, Sussex, Kent and Ireland. I have him in the 1871 census as a furniture dealer in Stockton. I have his death in 1878. I tried the Durham records and they have him on the 1851 census at Greatham age 20 and that would fit in with his birth date. I have the 1851 census for Greatham that I bought from CFHS but he is not listed in it. I do not mind buying records and like most others searchers have bought duff ones that I have given to NDFHS.
I have bought the Stepping stones 1841 census so I think I will just have to widen my search in that. Thanks,  Adamand

Hi Adamand

DurhamRecordsOnline shows a Thomas as born in Greatham and living in the District of Stockton - the Census you bought must not have covered Stockton.

Here's the entry.

In 1851 the Thomas Tinkler is a 20 year old Apprentice living in the household of two Drapers at 47 High Street, Stockton.  The occupation column is empty.  It also doesn't record if he is married or unmarried.

HO107/2383  Folio 773  Page 18  Sch 26

There is another apprentice, several servants and a porter also resident at the same address - if you want the full entry let me know.

Hello Helen. That is fantastic. Thank you for your help. I can now continue with my research :) Out of curiosity I would be interested with who he was with at Stockton(1851 census) because he was listed as a draper in the 1854 marriage entry, living at 25 high st, Sunderland and his wife to be was at 49 High st.  Sunderland.Once again a big thanks. Thanks Helen,I had a look at the Slaters 1854 directory and Mr White & Mr Wilkinson and entered at White and Wilkinson, Linen & Woolen Drapers 47 High st. So My Thomas may have left soon after and moved to Sunderland
and then came back to Stockton in the 1870s . Adamand

Further to my reply. Here is a website for Stockton photographs ( for those who don't already know about it) I just typed in 47 high st and found where it was. http://picture.stockton.gov.uk/  Adamand
