1841 Mennythorpe/Menethorpe please
« on: Tuesday 14 February 06 22:17 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for the Wilson family who were millers by occupation. George and Ann were the parents and had quite a brood of children between 1817-1835.

Thank you

Hi alnat

Just a thought that as he was a miller he may be listed in the trade directories of the time.  Historicaldirectories.org (Leicester university) have various ones online and free to search in pdf format.

I think the village is Menthorpe as I have Walmsleys and Beilbys from that area.  The Walmsleys were publicans and the Ferryman from Menthorpe across the river to Breighton.  Not very big villages, just a few houses and the manor.  Check it out over at genuki and a goole search.

Cheers

Thanks for the idea. I'll have a look. I have the web address in my favourites.

The spelling of the village changes on each Census. My 2001 UK Map book actually has it spelled Kennythorpe!

Hi alnat

Had a similar problem with Cowsby spelt Cowesby or Rowesby! and Borrowby spelt Barrowby!

Phonetics  ??? :o

Good job surnames became fashionable!

Sometimes the enumerator forgets.
Where was the 1835 child of George and Ann born.

I have realised I made an error in my earlier post, George's wife was Jane not Ann.

I found this transcript of the entry of 'professions and trades'
for MENETHORPE in White's Directory of 1840.

Wilson George, corn miller

Children were baptised at Westow which was the Parish Church.

In 1851 there was Jane 55, widow, Miller & farmer of 20 acres born Menneythorpe, Thomas 27, employed in mill, born Menneythorpe, Isabella 17 born Menneythorpe.  The reference is 2369/242 12, district Mennythorpe.

I have spelled the name of the village as it was found in each source.

Thank you very much for that, it looks very interesting. Sorry not to reply sooner, I've been away for a couple of days.

Would you mind double checking something please? Living with George the miller you have a 40 year old 'John'. This couldn't possibly be Jane, his widowed mother could it? By 1851 the widowed Jane aged 55 is running the mill.

Hello alnat

A good job someone is on the ball, it looks like John but woe is me I should have noticed the age is in the female column.
Sorry about that.
