Hi,

I was wondering if the ages you gave, are the ages they would have been in 1851, or are you getting their ages from another document?

In my Gordon line, I have a William Gordon married to an Elizabeth Wylie, both from Norhern Ireland. Their daughter Charlotte married William Campbell.

Have you ever come across any of these names in your search?

There are several William and Margaret Gordon pairings in the 1851 index for Glasgow but NOT at the ages you have given (or within 3 years)

Hello, the ages are as I believe them to be in 1851. William & Margaret (nee Crain) married on 10 December 1837 at parish Glasgow in Lanarkshire. I have a daughter Margaret born 17 Dec 1846 born Glasgow. Margaret would have been 4 years old at the time of the census. I am afraid I do not have an address. Do you have access to an index?
Many thanks for your help.

There are several Margaret Gordons listed between the ages of 3 & 7 but only 2 where the mother is also named Margaret. However (strange as it may seem) the father in each case is named ALEXANDER.

The first one also fits closest to your ages it is just the fathers forename which is different and this gives

Alexander Gordon aged 36 living in the ST. Johns area
Margaret Gordon aged 34
Sarah aged 8, Thomas aged 7, Margaret aged 4 and Fanny aged 2.

Hello Falkcyrn
This family seems very promising! I have William Gordon aged 46; Margaret Gordon aged 43; Sarah Gordon aged 18; Thomas Gordon aged 17 & Margaret Gordon aged 14 listed in Preston, Lancashire on the census in 1861. Does the 1851 give a profession for "Alexander"? Could there be a mistake with the name? I have a birth list on the LDS site giving Fathers name as William for Margaret. Many thanks for all this really helpful information. Thank you too for any others who have also done lookups. this is a really active chat site. I am exceedingly impressed. GWR

Unfortunately its only a general index and lacks much valuable information .... although it may only be a short wait until the 1851 census is available online at ScotlandsPeople (although don't hold your breath on that one  ;) )
