Hello Sue,

I looked at http://www.failteromhat.com and http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm The surname Scollans did not appear in Ireland during the period 1848-64 when Griffiths Valuation was taking place. I then looked at http://www.familysearch.org and found the name on the Census in three places - Britain, Canada and US. I only found one Susan, spelt Scollin. She appeared on the US 1880 Census - born in Ireland in 1840. Back to the drawing board

All the Best,

Christopher

Hello Christopher
Thank you very much for your time.

I tried to find Susan Scollans husband James Drumm
born Fermanagh on the Irish Times link you gave.

If I can remember there were 2 possibilties.
I paid to view them but keep getting "page cannot be displayed".

There seems to be a Server error.

Does this happen often or am I not lucky this time?

Hi Sue,

You had me confused by mentioning Irish Times link. I had to have a second look at the links I gave and think you mean the Irish Ancestors link. I do not know the answer to your query as I have never paid.  Does paying mean you are able to keep trying until the page can be displayed or are you restricted to the one attempt successful or not ??? That does not sound right to my mind ie paying and getting no information. Bit of a rip off if you get no information. Is there any method of contacting Irish Ancestry and making a complaint ???

All the Best,

Chris

Hello again Christopher,
I tried  Irish ancestry site again.
On "Search Surname" I entered DRUMM.
It returned 2 for Fermanagh in the Primary Valuation

I paid $8 US dollars to view this, but unfortunately it does
not give anymore info on the name Drumm   :(

It just gives a summary of sources covering that Parish.

To view any of these sources ie: census returns, directories, etc
I have to pay another $15.

Doesn't sound correct, does it?

No wonder tracing Irish Ancestry can be so trying    ::)
Sue

Going through older posts and came across this one. By now you might have been able to find more information but if you haven't done so the following might be of interest.

The LDS database www,familysearch.org has added lots of new Irish information including some extracted birth records. The following might be your Susan-
Susan Scollan born 9 August 1875 Co. Cavan- parents: John Scollan &    Ellen Fitzpatrick.

If those are the correct parents then there are other children listed-
1. James Scollan born 4 January 1878 Drumbrughs, Co. Cavan (mother Kilpatrick)
2. Mary Scollan born 23 January 1880 Crumbroughga, Co. Cavan (mother Fitzpatrick)
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi aghadowey

I was not aware of these updates to the LDS site.  :o

Thanks so much for the info - this is the correct Susan.

I can now try and research more on this family.

Welcome to RootsChat, Bmck  :)

Hi, I believe Susan Scollans was my grandad's granny.

Here's the birth record for Susan Scollan on 9th August 1875 at Drumbrughas townland. It is very hard to read with MMN as Fitzpatrick or Kilpatrick. Looks like the informant was Bridget (Fitzpatrick or Kilpatrick).
