BALLINA - BMD Records - Melody Family
« on: Tuesday 21 February 06 11:38 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the birth records for my great grandfather and his brothers.  They say they were born in Ballina.  Their father's name was Michael.  I do not know their mothers name.

John Melody b.c.1869
Patrick Melody b. 1874
Michael Melody b. 1877

Am I right in thinking that they would come under the Kilkmoremoy Parish? If so where would I be able to find these records if they are available? I hope someone can point me in the right direction. Thank you.

Hi,
Yes - Ballina is in Kilmoremoy parish.
I have looked at this site: www.leitrim-roscommon.com for surname Melody in 1901 census. Had your people left by then? There are none for Ballina itself but are 4 entries for the parish and other Melodys elsewhere.
That might be a start to pinpoint an area. I'm not sure if the parish records are available through Latter Day Saints libraries but you could try. At an LDS library you can search ther Irish indexes for births for the years you have and apply for copy birth certificates - you would get mother's name through this.
Best wishes
Heywood

Thank you for your reply.  Yes, I have been through the 1901 Census, but the father of the boys died prior to 1895.  I am aware of the other Melody family's in the area, but they are not related.  I think the mother must have died first, then the father.  The 3 boys arrived in Leeds around 1890.  They were aged 20, 16 and 14.  I will try LDS. Thank you for your help

It would appear that My Great Grandfather (Michael Melody - Born Leeds, W. York's in 1901) is one of their descendants. I can help you with the family tree from there but am struggling to go further back myself.

Michael had three children.

Hello and welcome to Rootschat.
Dee melody hasn’t been online for a long time.
If you want to leave your post here and give details of your research, I am sure people will try to help.

Is he Michael, son of John Melody and Bridget Cassidy
1901 4215/150/18

Do you have John and Bridget’s marriage details?

Yes, that is correct. Unfortunately he passed away in 1968 but as the family is getting older they are trying to find out more about their ancestral roots.

I think a trip to Mayo will be on the cards as soon as we are allowed to travel again.

Thanks for your quick response. Anything else would be useful.

Kind regards

Tony

Do you have the marriage certificate for John which confirms his father as Michael?

Civil records are here

Those births should be here but when I looked yesterday, it was difficult to match them up. I think I saw a family tree which had one of them born Attymass.
