1841 census lookup HAYCOCK Welshpool COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 21 February 06 18:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

Could someone please look up on 1841 census for Welshpool for a Thomas Haycock (born ca 1770 in Shropshire) who I'm told is an Innkeeper, so he maybe resident at a pub or inn.
I'd like to know who his family are, in particular, who are resident with him.

Looking forward to hearing from you
Helen

Hi Helen
Here's your family in 1841.

HO 107/1442/7 Borough of Welshpool, Enum. Dist. 14.
Address, Haycock's Buildings
Thomas Haycock, 70, Ind, n
Eliza Haycock, 18, F.S., y

There are 5 other families shown in Haycock's Buildings, the heads are - Robert Jones, Vaughan, Lewis, John Jones and Richard Jones.

Looks like Thomas retired from the licensed trade.   Are any of the other families related?
Cheers Dave

Hi Dave,

Many thanks for the info - it looks like only Thomas' youngest daughter was with him in 1841 - I'm not aware that any of the other names are related, but I'll keep them in mind!

Thanks once again
Helen

Hi Helen
I forgot to add the following that I came across when looking for Thomas Haycock - it was on anothe sheet of paper I'd written  ::)

1841 Census.   HO107/1442/6, ED 11, p10, Welshpool.   Address:   Blue Bull Cottage, all surnames Haycock

Charles, 35, Wool Carder, n
Ann, 35, y
Ann, 5, y
George, 3, y
Charles, 1, y

Any relation?   I thought I'd add it on the offchance - such an unusual name.

Cheers Dave

Hi Dave,

Many thanks for the further info.

Yes, Charles is Thomas Haycock's son - he was born in Oswestry, Shropshire, so definitely born out of county.

There may be other Haycock's around - Thomas had 10 Children, but some stayed in the Oswestry area, one at least was in New Zealand - so possibly those born in the Welshpool area might be around in 1841 - Mary Ann Griffiths (nee Haycock) born 1811 and husband Thomas, Edward born 1813 & Joseph born 1818 and even my direct ancestor John born 1816 could be around in Welshpool or even Llanidloes, as he doesn't marry until 1843, for example.

It would be great if you could find any more Haycock's, particularly John  :)

It is an unusual name for Montgomeryshire and probably Wales in general, but not for Shropshire - lots of Haycock's there in early part of 19th century.

Thanks again
Helen

Hi Helen,
I thought there would be a connection.   I'll keep a lookout when I'm trolling through Montgomeryshire.   Problem is the 1841 census is not indexed, so without knowing the Parish to look in it's a monstrous task.
You never know others may surface.
Cheers Dave

Hi again Dave,

If you come across any more Haycock's in Montgomeryshire in 1841 at any point in your research, it'd be great if you could let me know, but no rush of course!

Many thanks once again

Helen

I am a descendant of Thomas Haycock, the innkeeper of the Three Tun Tavern, which was removed to allow Jehu Road to be made. I live in New Zealand. 2 of my anscestors (James & John) emgrated to NZ in 1842.
The Eliza who appears in the 1841 census was the only unmarried daughter at that time, and had changed her mind about an earlier application to accompany her 2 brothers to NZ.
The children of Thomas and his wife Mary were:
Thomas b.1802 Oswestry; James b.1803 Oswestry; Charles b.1805 Oswestry; Elinor b.1808 Oswestry; George b. 1809 OPswestry; Mar Anne b.18809 Castle Caereinion; Edward b. 1813 Castle Caereinion; John b. 1816 Hydan Dol; Joseph b.1819 Pooltown; Eliza b.1822 Pooltown.
Thomas was born in Bagley, Salop, but after marrying Mary Standfield in 1801 moved to Oswestry where he had the Butchers Arms Inn.
His father, Thomas, had also married a Mary (LYTHE), He was a blacksmith, and later moved to Castle Caereinion.
I have a copy of the Will of Mary Lythe.
