Death records in Kansas
« on: Friday 24 February 06 00:16 GMT (UK) »
Have just found that I can order a Death certificate for Kansas online......

But I don't have the month and date - only the year - so I cannot complete the order......   :(

Are there any index's online - or another way I can find this out ??

The year was 1957.

Edits - may as well put his details that I do know -

James Harley Williams
Born Aug 12th 1879 - North Carolina
Died ? 1957 K.C. Wyandotte Kansas

ps - to get a death cert from Kansas - you have to be directly related and supply a Social Security No.......

Thanks liza -  :)

I meant - that the person applying for the death cert needs a SS number -

I don't have one - I'm from New Zealand - but MotherInLaw has one - so I could apply for one using her name and details - I HOPE ?

Gosh I don't need a legal certificate anyway - just a photocopy or similar - as this is my husbands Grandfather and we know very little  about him - and he isn't on any SS lists either ???  Which I find a bit strange  :o

The second paragraph from the below link to  the Kansas Department of Health and Environment states that the $13 fee for a certified death certificate is for a "5 year search."  Since you know the death year, it shouldn't be a problem that you don't know the month or yearl---Genealiza

Also, from the same website, but the index page, the following:

http://www.kdheks.gov/vital/index.html

Eligibility: Birth, death, marriage, and divorce records (vital records) in Kansas are not public records. Certified copies of vital records are released to the person named on the record, immediate family, a legal representative, or anyone who can prove a direct interest, such as a named beneficiary or someone who jointly owns property with the person whose record is requested. The record must be necessary for the determination of personal or property rights. Proof of legal representation, direct interest, or written authorization is required if the requestor is not named on the record or an immediate family member.

The previous reply should have said, "not a problem if you don't know the month or DAY.
Also, I directed you initially to the SS# database since that is really the only national database of deaths.  If you can find the person on the database, it will give the date of death.---Genealiza

Many many thanks Genealiza -

I was going through the vitalchek.com site - which I got from a Kansas site - but not the link you gave me.  MumInLaw will have some idea of at least the month.  The link does take you to vitalchek.com to do the order and if you go through the Kansas link that you gave me you get the option of an approx date - many thanks again.

No luck with rootsweb - re SS number - they say that 98% of their database is from 1962 to the present - so that explains that.

My MumInLaw is this persons DaughterInLaw - and it is acceptable for her to request a Death Cert - hopes that I can use my creditcard as she doesn't have one :)

Thanks for your time - this place is so awesome because of helpful people like you :D
