Census Look-up request - Milgate Peasmarsh?
« on: Friday 24 February 06 19:14 GMT (UK) »

I have Thomas Bine Milgate b1805 in Peasmarsh married to Phyllis Pont b c1807 in Peasmarsh. In 1841 they are living in Beckley, but I don't know where they went after that. Would someone be able to look them up after this date please

Many thanks

Kirsty     :)

You don't have a birthplace for Thomas, so how about this one?

Hello

Thank you for your replies.

Unfortunately my Thomas was born in Peasmarsh and baptised there 21.4.1805. He married Phyllis Pont in March 1828 in Peasmarsh. They had children in Peasmarsh and Beckley between 1828 and 1846 Sarah, Steven, Alfred, Martha, Ann, Thomas, Elizabeth, Hannah and Albert. IGI lists their mother variously as Phillis/Phoebe/Philadelphi. There were other Milgates in Beckley at the time. Did they return to Peasmarsh by 1851?

Thank you Valda

That's given me a few things to think about. I can't decide whether Thomas married twice. IGI has two entries for Thomas's marriage -one to Phyllis Pont in 1828 and one to Phoebe in about 1830. She also keeps changing her birthplace - Peasmarsh/Whatlington/Hollington. Was Phoebe pet name for Phyllis or Philadelphia I wonder?

Quick look on the IGI confirms that 3 year old James is Thomas and Phoebe's daughter Elizabeth's son, the unmarried dairymaid next door in 1861!

I don't suppose Cainger could be Ranger could it?

Many thanks

Kirsty

The Peasmarsh parish registers are not on the IGI so though the 1828 entry on the IGI gives an exact date both that entry and the 1830 one are merely submitted by members of the Church of Latter Day Saints - Mormons, so there is no evidence either is correct. You would have to check the registers themselves.

The name could indeed be Ranger.

Thomas Bine Milgate (1805-?) was the son of Thomas Milgate and Mary Bine, who was in turn the son of Thomas Milgate and Rebecca May, who  had four sons, Thomas (1773), John (1768), James (1776),and Samuel (1781).
My mother was a Milgate, descended from Samuel.
The children of Samuel and John emigrated from Beckley and Peasmarsh in 1838/9 to NSW as bounty assisted migrants. I can find no trace of the migration of James or Thomas and I have no death records to know the place of their death, however I suspect they stayed in Sussex with their brothers.
I also suspect that Thomas Bine Milgate did not emigrate with his cousins, although his brother, William (1796) did. I have found an Alfred Milgate who settled in the Riverina district of southern NSW. I am surmising, as Alfred is an unusual name in the Milgate family that this is the son of Thomas Bine Milgate. He would have been only 7 at the time of the Milgate emigration but may have joined his extended family at a later date.
The information above tends to support my suspicions. There does not seem to be any trace of Alfred in the later census records.
Additionally, Thomas Bine Milgates brother, William (1776) emigrated with his family and settled around Bathurst in the 1850s, around the time of the gold rush. It is possible that Alfred travelled with them or met with them after a later emigration. I have little further information on the branch of Thomas (1773) and Mary Bine. I would appreciate any further information as I am writing a family history.
