Hi,

Where does that information come from? I have searched the IGI and have failed to find anything which is why I am hoping parish records could take my research further back.

The only details I have is that my gx2 grandfather Henry Turner was born in Haddenham, in 1840,  to Henry Turner & Hannah Alsop. They were married in Haddenham in Sept 1839, I have details of their marriage. There were two other children that I know of - Anna Maria & John George.

I have found the wedding entry for Henry & Alethea, at Haddenham. Alethea's parents were John Alsop & Alethea Law, she was born in 1819 in Gravely. The marriage entry on the IGI states Henry's father was Samuel Turner.

I also have found the family in the 1841-1871 census where Henry Turner senior is entered as 25, 35 & 45 years of age. He was a bricklayer, as were his sons. The 1851 & 61 census' state he was born in Cambridgeshire. I am unsure what the 1841 census states though.

Thanks

Nikki

There are no Turner baptisms listed in Haddenham between 1718 and 1836. Of course this doesn't mean that your Henry wasn't born there. He could have been baptised elsewhere- I have one family who lived in Aldreth ( part of Haddenham parish) who had half their children baptised in Cottenham. There are a lot of non conformists in the area too and there was certainly a Baptist chapel in Haddenham from about 1817.

I have found Hannah Alsop's baptism. She was actually baptised in Haddenham not Graveley. The IGI have a couple of batches of Haddenham baptisms listed under Graveley. Anyway she was baptised at Haddenham parish church on 25th July 1819 daughter of John and Alethea Also and her father's occupation is given as jobber.

Hi,

Thanks for that, I vaguely remember someone telling me that the IGI had some of Haddenham transcribed incorrectly as Gravely.

Can you see any likely matches in any of these other locations or denominations for the Turner's then?

Thanks

Nikki

I have just had another look on the IGI and have found the following Turner marriages in Haddenham:

Ann, dau. of William, m. Joseph Brown Allen, 1783
Robert m. Mary Dann, 1799
Samuel m. Amy Pake, 1834
William, son of Philip, m. Amy Porter, 1848

And of most interest:

Samuel, son of Samuel, m. Sarah Netherwood
 - 14th Aug 1848, Samuel was 35, and Sarah 23 yrs of age.

As far as I know all the non conformist records for Haddenham are still sitting in the chapels and haven't been transcribed. I can check the PRs for a few  neighbouring villages .

The 1851 census for Haddenham says that Henry was born in Cambridge so it might be worth checking  there.

I know I keep harping on about the Cambs FHS website, but they do have a Baptism Index 1801-37 which, unlike the IGI, covers the whole of the county

http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html

There's a Henry son of Samuel and Elizabeth in 1815 in Cambridge Holy Trinity, which may bear out what anneb found in 1851

Regards

David
