Welshpool Boys School 1859
« on: Tuesday 28 February 06 19:38 GMT (UK) »
In February 1859 my grandfather Francis John Davies commenced teaching as an Assistant Master in Welshpool  boys School. Can anyone please tell me how long he was there and any thing regarding the school. He was in Porth y Waen School by1884.

Hi eric,

I don't have any specific info on your grandfather, but you might be interested in this website

http://history.powys.org.uk/school1/welshpool/welmenu.shtml

It is a history of Welshpool in Victorian times, including a section on local schools.

Have you found your grandfather in the 1851, 61, 71, and 81 census?  That might help you track his employment.  If you can post some more details about him, like year and place of birth, I'm sure we can help you find him in the census.

Francis John Davies went to Welshpool Boys School as Assistant Master in February 1879, He was 20 years old at the time,he moved from Churchstoke, where he was born and went to school. It is recorded in a book that he was at Porth y Waen School as Schoolmaster in 1884, where he stayed untill January 1891. We believe he may have had another post between 1879 and 1884 which we would like to know.

This looks like him with his family in Churchstoke.  It could be that he is still at the Welshpool School, but just happened to be visiting the family on census night?  Or is he living in Churchstoke and working in Welshpool?  Seems a bit far for that...

Thanks for the imfo ,it is the correct person and family ,It does seem rather far to travel, if he was still working in Welshpool boys school ,but of course it could have been school holidays on Census night in 1881 on 3/4th April.
