help with finding my g g grandfather please

can anyone help please i am trying to find out about my great great grandfather his name was james frederick smith i know he was a bombadier based at athlone roscommom he was married at st peters church in march 1881 he was killed probably in some sort of conflict in 1882.can anyone please help me by giving me a starting point on how to find out what regiment he was in and also how he died and where. i  would be really grateful for any help anyone could give me. . . .. thanks :)
