When I looked at the photo I thought 1,2,4,5, for the children.

See that scattletrap has said the same. Great Minds....!!

Were her 6 or 7 children girls/boys in what order? Would looking at that help narrow down which ones these are? Obviously these go Girl, boy, girl, baby, in descending age order (baby looks like girl, but often babies were all dressed girllike until walking in the 'old days')
So, what I am saying is - if Isabel's children were say, 4 boys then girl boy girl girl, for example, you can conclude these are the youngest.
If she went for a nice random assortment, this approach wont help!

I like lizdb's way of thinking, that apart I definately reckon that the ages range from 1(or slightly over) to no more'n 5, as for the date - I was definately out in my guestimation but the ages plus lizdb's logic should be able to straighten that out.
If all that fails just take a wild guess and let your descendents struggle through your folly - as we often do today.

Was she the Isobel Raine b c. 1893 in Co. Durham. It's just that the houses look like coal miners/industrial workers' terraces. If so, and she looks in her mid 20s, it would narrow the field a bit.

Hi

Thanks Annie, lizdb, scrattletrap, Prue, and gadget and denn again.

Isabel was born 1874 and yes, its a mining family.  She didn;t marry until 1896 and at the moment I have

Ada born December 1897
Robert William b 1901
Thomas Henry b 1903 died 1909
Emma b1904
Jane b 1905
Herbert b 1906
Ruth c 1906/7

and Frederick b 1914.

I'm still awaiting confirmation of DOBs so some of these are (hopefully) close guesses.

So we have G B B G G B G and then a later B.

I like Liz's suggestion of G B G baby but if so I'm still struggling to find a sequence.

Wish I was as logical as everyone else here!  Maybe its as late as 1914, and the baby is Frederick?

cheers

Paul

Hi Paul

If it helps here is a photo of my mining family on holiday in 1916. Note hair styles similar (except mine were wavy) and my Uncle Jack with smaller collar than your little lad.
The woman on the right at the front is my grandmother who was born 1877 - for age comparison. I now think yours might be earlier.

I hesitate to suggest this because it could make you tear your hair out, have you considerd that there is a possibility that not all the children in the pic are hers (nephew/niece ect)

I've also got another and very similar picture to yours - same type of house background - taken in 1903. it was taken on the same day as a sister was married (have grp). They're all in 'Sunday best'. I think photographers would do this to earn a few more bob on top of the wedding group photos. Do you know the dates of anyone in the family who were married 1902-1908? - the date I'm coming around to now.

That's true Denn - a possibility!

I've just had an e-mail cnfirming the DOB of the 'second youngest' on the photo as September 1908.

So I guess 1910 is starting to look like a pretty reasonable supposition on the part of the person who sent me the photograph?

Gadget - loved the Llandudno photograph!
