Hi derbs

If any records survive, they will be in the East Sussex Records Office at the Maltings in Lewes.

Perhaps a phone call or an e-mail to them would verify what records they have.

I know they have the following Poorhouse / Union records

Town         Births              Baptisms          Deaths
Battle        1866-1946      -                       1835-1950
Ewhurst    1893-1950      -                       1835-1841
Hastings
St Helens  1893-1950      1941-1964        1866-1953
Buchanan                         1932
Hospital                            1924-25
Sanatorium                       1925
Rye            1915-1932                             1844-1866
Ticehurst    1852-1932      1909-1942      1852-1941

From your baptism list:

Mary Elizabeth 20 - probably now married
Martha 17 - rounded down would be 15 - correct age
John 16 - correct age
Salome 11 - missing
Richard 11 - correct age
David 9 - correct age
Johnathan 9 - correct age, both baptised on same day
Priscilla 6 - correct age

1841 census - not forgetting ages were rounded down to nearest 5
TUTT Martha, 40
           Martha, 15
           David, 8
           Johnathan, 8
           Priscilla, 6
           Thomas, 2 months

This is definitely your family

However there is mass of confusion over Thomas who is my proven ancestor.  At roughly the same time Martha daughter had son george Barber Tutt illegitamate.  I can only prove my link by confirmimg there were 2 babies and that George is not infact thomas taken on by mother Martha.  Any thoughts as to where I could obtain this info.

Kind regards

Hi there Derbs

Always knew one of my messages would come back and haunt me one day ;D

I think the first and only point of call is the Parish Registers to see if you have one or two baptisms, and who it lists the parents as?

Hi Chris

No your postings are not coming back to haunt you, without the information re poorhouse you gave me I would not have got as far as I have.  Big thank you.  I have information that the older children of the family did survive perhaps with the father Richard or were boarded out as workers and wondered where you got the 1841 details from.  I will have to buy certificates to try and confirm the Thomas / George matter.

Happy hunting
