WHITLEY/BRAKE families please

Ben Whitley (b.c.1864 Halifax),  married Elizabeth Brake in March quarter 1900 at Hunslet, West Riding.
Can anyone give me details of these two people please.   I'd like to know any birth, marriage, death dates and places.
Also names, details and dates etc. of their parents please.

this is the best fit for the 1871 census, but if you were to obtain the marriage cert you would probably have their father's names on it also to help identify them


  They are living on Grosvenor Terrace, Halifax and John is a Wiredrawer

John Whitley born roughly 1823  in Birstall, W.Yks
Sarah Ann "" born roughly 1821  """
Hannah  ""born roughly 1848 ""
Sarah   ""born roughly1853 in  Ovenden
Mary A  ""born roughly 1861 """
Benj """born roughly 18614 """""


In 1881 they are still at same place with no more family members The only difference is the mum and Hannah say they are born Liversedge and Ovenden has changed to Halifax.




As seen in the 1891 this is Ben looks like the marriage in 1900 was his second one?  they are living at 8 Taylor Street Halifax and Ben is down as a Commercial Clerk.

Isabella Whiteley born roughly 1864 in  Halifax

1901 I should find your Ben married to an Elizabeth but the one I have posted about is still with Isabella.



Well I leave it with you to scan over, but LIke I say if you h ave a cert or two it will help to narrow down the field.

I will post this as I have just found a Ben and a Lizzie together in the 1901 census. 

this couple are living in Bradford and Benjamin is an Iron Turner

Benjamin Whitley born roughly 1863  in Denby Dale, Yks

Lizzie Whitley born roughly 1865  in Worksop,Notts


If you believe the second one bon in Denby Dale to be you let me know and I will see what else I can find.

Hi Winston,

Thanks for the info.  So far I have found Ben Whitley (b.c.1864) in 1912 he was a Lithographic artist, living at Carlton, Nottingham. His wife was Elizabeth Brake, I think she may have been born around 1865 in
Market Harborough, Leics.
His father may have been John Whitley b.c.1824 Birstall,and his mother Sarah Ann ? b.c.1821 Liversedge.
It's interesting to find that Elizabeth was his second wife, I wonder who Isabella was ?

What lead you to Ben Whitley and Elizabeth Brake?


the one I posted in 1901 showing a Lizzie for Wife and a Walter was already with her in 1891 census and was then an Iron turner.

Hi Wendy,

O.K. Here goes !  I'm doing this for my friend. 
Her father was Eric William Whitley, b. 5/12/1912 in Carlton, Nottingham.  His parents were Ben Whitley (a lithographic artist) and Elizabeth Brake. 
We've got his birth certificate so we know this is correct !    We don't know alot more, but all we've found has been on  familysearch.org.  In 1881 Ben was a commercial clerk, he had 3 sisters : Mary Ann b.c.1860,  Sarah b.c.1853 and Hannah b.c.1848.
We would be really grateful if you could comfirm any of this, and also find anything else please.
We'd like to find the surname of Bens mother Sarah Ann.
Can you find anything about Eric William Whitleys wife Dorothy Durrant ? They must have married around 1935-1945.

At this stage then we are walking blind by guessing how old Ben* Whitley was as we are only in going on what you initially found between you on the 1881 census.

I would definately advise friend to purchase the marriage cert of the ones whose marriage you noted earlier in the year 1900.   Was Eric William Whitley an only child or did he have older brothers or sisters becase if they maried in 1900 then there was 11-12 years before Eric was born.

So basically what I am asking is does you friend know of any Aunts or Uncles born to Ben and Elizabeth who were born before Eric?

Will get back to this again later on.

We know that Eric had a brother Ben Brake Whitley and a sister Dorothy, don't know their birthdates.

familysearch.org gives us another Ben Brake Whitley b. June quarter 1900 and died June quarter 1900.
We assume that he was the first son.

I'll come back on the computer after 21.30 tonight to see if you've come up with anything.
