mcgilvray - Calder(Cawdor) and Greenock
« on: Sunday 05 March 06 11:09 GMT (UK) »
I'm seeking Elizabeth McGilvray (whatever spelling) b 1827 Calder, Invernessshire - I've since discovered that Calder is really Cawdor and is considered to be in Nairn and not Inverness.  According to the death cert her parents are Donald Mcgilvray, farmer, and Elizabeth McPherson but I'm not sure this is correct.

Thanks Joe

That certainly gives me something to work with.  Unfortunately, Elizabeth's age is confusing from the various documents - census etc - but I think she would have been born around 1827.  I don't think I've checked the 1841 1851 census records and I'll do that now.  Where did you get the list of children from - Eliz would have been born after the youngest child shown there.

Hi Joe

The only Elizabeth McGilivray that I can find  (in the wole of Scotland) on the 1841 that fits is already away from home:

Daviot, Invernessshire
District 95 ED 5 Page 3

David Hood, farmer
(others)
Elizabeth McGilivray, 14, Farm servant, born county

I'll see if I can find any parents. She might well have married by 1851.

Added - I don't think this is her. Just checked and there's a baptism DAviot in 1827 - parents Farquhar and Ann

Here's a possible family in Cawder on the 1841:

Blairmore
District 122 ED 2 Page 1

Donald, 35-39, ag lab
Catherine, 35-39
Donald (could be 7 or 8 -faint print)
Ann, 6
John, 3

All born Nairn

Could it be a second marriage :-\

Thanks all for your thoughts on this one.  You've given me some ideas to pursue.   Elizabeth married Alexander McKirdy in 1854 in Greenock.

Oh Sheena - if only they'd waited another year, you'd have had her parents' names  :(
