Yes BB may have been some kind of ditto.
My logic for BB possibly abbreviation for base born is that as recently as 1911 census there were columns to list "Lunatics & Imbeciles", so why not list illegitimate folks as well.

The image doesn't look like it's BB but rather Do Do (for Ditto Ditto) spaced rather far apart. Perhaps OP was looking at a transcription.

Agreed, it doesn't say BB, it says 'do' 'do'. The same is shown where surnames have been 'dittoed'. The page in question, for anyone who wants to see it is HO 107 / 1964 / 204 / 19

Yes, definitely "do" "do". I can't see how that could have ever been misinterpreted as BB.

Base born written in birth or baptism entries - yes.
In the census - no.
Yes, there was a column for 'infirmities' but being base born does not fit into that category.

I don't see any 'logic'.  We're talking about the 1851 forms which were much revised in later years, some asked for 'deaf & dumb' among other infirmities. Usually the column heading indicated what enumerators should include - was BB ever listed?  Base Born would be likely on a baptism record, but I think not in a census.
