Hi

Hoping you can help me locate my Hampson and Walters ancestors.

Eliza Walters was born around 1800 (aged 71 in 1871 census) in Stockport.  She married William Hampson.  The first child that I have knowledge of was Ellen Hampson who was born in Congleton in about 1837.  (The family then moved to Salford where other children were born in the early 1840s.)

I hope you will be able to help me pick up their track...

Hi Fiona,
I have a record of William Hampson and Eliza Walters marrying on the
8th Sept.1817 at St.Mary Cheadle Stockport
this the only marriage of those names in the Cheshire index  that I have.
There are no records of Hampsons born in Congleton between 1837 and 1850
How likely is it that they were in Congleton during the 1941 census?
If you think it highly likely then I will do a search for you.
I do not have census records for Salford so you may have to post another request on the Lancashire board.
Please give as much info. as possible.
regards
peterbennett

Hi Peter

With thanks for your help and your trouble.  The Walters-Hampson marriage sounds very hopeful.  I don't suppose the register is one of those all encompassing registers with idiosyncratic information that tells you who their parents were and where they came from etc?

I don't think they were in Cheshire at the 1841 census although it is always a possibility with these things.  I think they had a daughter, Catherine, in Salford, in about 1840/1841 and a last son, Edward, in 1844 - again in Salford.  With thanks for the offer of looking up on the census though.

As for Ellen Hampson, their daughter, Congleton was the place of birth she/her husband/her mother constantly gave for her place of birth 1861 onwards in Salford.  It is possible it was 1836.  I have noticed two Ellen Hampson's born in 1837 on the Cheshire BMD site, but haven't pursued either yet because I couldn't be sure which might be closest to Congleton geographically.

It might help if I found other children.  If you, or anyone else, have thoughts on how I might locate them without the ever-helpful BMD sites, I'd be delighted to know.  I will pursue the 1817 marriage and see where it leads,

Hi Fiona
A search of Catherine showed birth, Salford, dec,1839,
volume.xx 706.
this being correct it is unlikely that the Hampsons were in Congleton after September 1839.
I don't think that the 2 Ellens you mentioned (1 born Dukinfield and one Neston Wirral) are associated in anyway with the one your looking for.
I wonder if the father was a tradesman at all? If so there will be trade directories (Pigots) for the 1830,s in Congleton.
Failing that I don't know where your based but it might need a visit from you to the Cheshire Records Office in Chester to view the parish records for birth records. Or telephone the Congleton library (01260 271141) to see what they may have.
Good luck

hi,
can you give me a district or address for Thomas Langford
from his death certificate and a name of the person who registered the death?
I will then do a search of the 1841 census, which should answer a lot of your questions.
