George MacKenzie and Catharine Mactavish, Contin
« on: Thursday 09 March 06 16:02 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone any info on Contin parish. My gggparents, George and Catharine, had family in Contin parish between 1823 and 1838 at least but I have no info on them.  Have been able to trace three of family, John(ggfather) moved to Moray(<1858), Ann married from Contin in 1847 and Ewen(Evan, Ewan) moved to Inverness(<1855).
Any help or suggestions appreciated.

regards

hi pal,

i could not find a marriage for the couple, like you i found their children in contin right up until 1838, cannot find them on the 1841 census, if you found 3 children that survived they must be on the 1841 census somewhere!!! we need a wee bit of magic here with a census lookup.

have you looked for death certs yet?

all dates extracted from the igi's for the mackenzie children:

james...17/10/1823
john...11/3/1826
ann...16/8/1827
james...9/6/1829
mary...christened...28/12/1830
catharine...christened..25/9/1832
evan...christened...5/11/1834
margaret...christened...1/3/1838

always searching

Hi Joe,
Thanks for interest. I have found that James(b 1829) married in Nairnshire in 1856 and he, his wife and her family emigrated to Australia in 1857. Not been able to find any of them so far in 1841 and 1851 census.
As you say always searching!
Have you any interest in these names?

Hi Monica,
Thanks for that; it looks interesting . Evan/Ewan was a weaver on marriage cert in 1855 in Inverness so that could fit. Willtry to follow these up.
Thanks

It's harder to be more definite on the 1851 about the other children. They are working away from home/family so difficult to say whether it's the right McKenzie. For example, this is the only John McKenzie showing born in Contin in 1826 +/- 2yrs:

John McKenzie, 24, labourer, b.Contin
Address: Milltown Brach, Petty Inverness

And for James, searching 1828 +/- 5yrs:

James McKenzie, 25, farm servant, b. Contin
Address: Graney, Rafford, Moray

And Catherine, searching 1832 +/- 5yrs:

Catherine McKenzie, 17, house servant, b.Contin
Address: 27 Kings Street, Inverness

Hard to say if they are the right ones but I am searching by first name and birth place only to pick up on any spelling variants of McKenzie.

As for 1841, cannot find any of them as yet....I'll keep looking  ;)

:D The 1841 entry (I think!) finds father and mother also. Everyone showing as born outside the county:

George McKenzie 50, ag. lab.
Catherine McKenzie 40
Mary McKenzie    10
Catherine McKenzie 8
Margt McKenzie    3

Address: Abow St, Inverness

In the next household, there is also a Margaret McKenzie, 60, also showing as born outside the county. Not sure if connected to the family. Can't easily see where Evan b. 1834 is. There are a couple of entries for Evans but given that relationships within the household are not shown in the 1841 Census, can't tell whether they are sons in the house or some other relationship.

Regards.

Hi Monica,
Again thanks, looks interesting as Rafford is not far from Ardclach where James got married. I have quite a bit of checking to do but at laesta i have a few more possible leads.
Joe mentioned a Glasgow meet, is this a general thing or specific to certain people as I am near Glasgow.
Alastair
PS 1841 is first for that census so looks promising - even more to follow up!
Thanks
