Geography lesson needed - Nottingham
« on: Saturday 11 March 06 11:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

I am looking for birth info for Alfred Wilkinson/Seymour  born 1834.

Per census his place of birth is as follows:

1861 Nottingham,
1871 Nottingham,
1881  Mollinghouse  Notts ?  (it's written like this)

Is Nottingham short for Nottinghamshire ?

and What could that last town name possibly be... I haven't located it as it's been transcribed anywhere and am open to any suggestions...

thanks
Seymour: Wales, England, Canada
Wilkinson: England
wilkinson-seymour:  anywhere
Gray/Yeates: Ireland
Bonehill: England
Adams: Blakeney, Tipton, B'ham

Hi,
Think it says "Nottingham" too - the enumerator hasn't "dotted his i's and crossed his t's". The Notts? in the final column was probably a query from a separate checker who couldn't read it for sure either.
Hope that helps, Rob

How about this baptism?

Alfred Seymore Wilkinson baptised 25/08/1833 at Basford St Leodegarius to Robert Wilkinson and Sarah, living Basford and father a lace maker

He seems to be the only child baptised to this couple on the index

Heather,

WOW....that really seems to be it..........we later used Wilkinson-Seymour

I am assuming the place you mentioned is in Notts...

I couldn't locate them on IGI.

Alfred would have been the only one born in Notts, his sibs before him were Durham (prof researcher couldn't find them), Gloucs, and those after were in Yorks......

Thanks soooo much for this...you've made my day !!! :)

(Robert later became a brewer in Thorne)

St Leodegarious, Basford was in Notts at that time, just north of Nottingham town as was.  It is is still there but is now within the Nottingham City boundary.

Regarding Notts vs Nottm, I've found several instances where enumerators put Nottm (i.e Nottingham) when it should have been Notts (Nottinghamshire).

Incidentally, was your Wilkinson ancestor notable?  It's just that there is a Wilkinson Street in Basford, between Radford Road and Western Boulevard.

I am not quite sure who (if at all)  in the family was notable....  there was a relative that stated we were somehow connected to the swordmakers (nothing confirms this yet), and on the Seymour side, well, her name was what the family went by when the father died and wilkinson-seymour is still carried on over 100 yrs later....

Alfred's parents identified themselves in 1841 as Robert & Sarah, then 1851 as Alfred & Sarah.  Sarah in 1861 identified Wales as place of birth... in 1851 the whole family is noted from Portsmouth...but that was not wholely correct (I wonder if Robert-the father was though and the taker added the "ditto" for all).

The only true rumour in the family that remained handed down...  one of them came from money...

sorry for the delay...the revamped computer crashed again.
