Donaghue
« on: Saturday 11 March 06 16:07 GMT (UK) »
My husbans's ggggrandfather was John
Donaghue. We know he came from Ireland and bought proprty in Ontario, Canada in 1820. with such a common name we have no idea how to start researching for him in Ireland. Any suggestions appreciated.
Donaghue,Elphick.

Hi Stevensc,

My Donaghey family was from Tyrone and when they came to Canada in 1873 they changed their name to Donaghue. They mainly lived in Montreal. My advise would be to look at all the siblings that you know of. The only reason we found Tyrone was not from my direct ancestor, but from his brothers death certificate that mentioned where in Ireland they were from. Also if you know he came to Canada in 1820, if you are able to locate the immigration record, that might give you a clue also on what port he traveled from and maybe what county he was from. Best of luck :)

Famhistorian, just in case you hadn't realised, the thread initiator stevensc was active here only once in March 2006, so this is a 15 year old thread.
